Foundational Knowledge Examination
The Foundational Knowledge Examination (FKE) is intended for individuals who have been employed by a forensic science service provider for at least 1 year as an analyst or technician in any discipline in the field of Criminalistics. Candidates are expected to have some experience performing scientific analysis of evidence. This exam is not intended for staff whose only responsibility is for intake, transfer, and/or return of evidence.

The examination consists of 75 questions, plus 15 pilot questions. The examination lasts up to 2 hours, 15 minutes. *Please note that the pilot questions are not represented in the Examination Blueprint.
Qualifications for initial certification and recertification are found in the Certification Scheme. Duties and associated tasks used to develop the certification examination are located in the Job Description. The examination outline, suggested references, and example questions are contained in the Study Guide.
